Maragane is a local variant of the Occitan word baragane for wild leek.

The various musicians met little by little, each from different regions and musical worlds. The band was born in February 2011 during a ball. Their repertory is dance music from Western Europe, but not only. It seems that the group has now acquired its own identity.

Maragane plays mainly traditional dance music, sometimes personal compositions, mainly in French and Occitan. The group also gives lectures on the history of traditional music, goes into schools, teaches traditional dances to lively music.

In 2013, Maragane played in Occitan for an Esperanto congress in the Bordeaux region. This concert was the group’s first real contact with the Esperanto world.
A few weeks later, the organizers of the OSIEK seminar in St.-Amand-Montrond (France) invited Maragane to experiment with a concert in Esperanto. The proposal was a real challenge; in three months the group composed, wrote, and arranged their own lyrics and compositions, using only their usual instruments, guided by the constraints of the moment.

The experience was pleasant enough to think about working on a CD.
