Esperanto Desperado – Copenhaguen (Denmark)

Esperanto Desperado is an international group that sings rhythmic and toe-tapping songs with strikingly original texts in Esperanto.

In the year 2000, the group released its first CD on the Vinilkosmo label, Jen venas ... BroKantaĵoj. Most of the songs recorded on that album were written by the group, but some were older songs dating from Amplifiki, the first rock group in Esperanto, where Kim started out.

At that time, Esperanto Desperado was made up of Amir Hadiahmetrović (AmoDeL’Iro), Brian Lausten, Helle Eble Cleary, Kim J. Henriksen (Kimo), and Thomas Crowfurd; for the second album, Hotel Desperado, appearing in 2004, Nis Bramsen replaced Thomas Crowfurd at the drums. The Ghanaian djembe and percussion player Mark Dziwormu also played on that album.

At the beginning of 2005, the members decided to stop playing together. Their last concert was in the International Youth Congress in the summer of 2005 in Zakopane, Poland.

Afterwards, Amir formed a new group. As for Kim and the other musicians, they formed another group with the name of their last album, Hotel Desperado.

In the autumn of 2005, Laurent Fricault from France took over the drums, and Karl Maybach from the United States was on bass, trombone, and keyboard. In 2006, Espo Despo began preparing a new album. But at the end of the year a second bassist, Andrzej Krejniuk from Poland, joined the group, and his style fundamentally changed the group’s sound. That is why the songs had to be rerecorded, and the new album only came out in the summer of 2009 on the Web and on disk on the occasion of the Esperanto Cultural Festival in Elsinore, Denmark. The group members hail from different countries : the United States, France, Bosnia, and Poland.

The new group’s music is mostly composed by Amir Hadziahmetović (originally from Bosnia), and the lyrics are by Amir and several other writers. The band plays in a mixture of rock styles with world music, reggae, and ska influences.
