Vojaĝo - Toulouse - Occitania - France
Vojaĝo is a group of four musicians from Toulouse, the "Rose City” in the South West of France. It was Gilles Bénard (keyboard) and Jean-Claude Patalano (sax) who had played together since middle school, who created Vojaĝo in 2015.
The adventure began in the 80s when these two friends decided to create a jazz-rock group which they called Khephren (from the name of one of the three great pyramids of Giza in Egypt). Then the vagaries of life scattered the group and it was only a few years later that the two friends got together again to found Latin Viaggio in order to play in their own way a Latin-jazz repertoire (bossa-nova, samba, salsa, choro).
Floréal Martorell, the director of the Vinilkosmo label, then offered the group to record the songs they performed in Esperanto. However, the difficulties in obtaining the reproduction rights of existing works seemed to compromise the project. It was then that the idea of composing original songs germinated and since the texts had to be in Esperanto, well, they learned Esperanto! This is how Vojaĝo was born. With the help of Audrey Rey on vocals, Pascal Marceillac on drums, and Didier Kerboull on bass, the first album entitled Planedo nia (our planet) in Latin-jazz colors, was released in 2017.
Shortly after the release of the first LP and a few musical adventures later, singer/songwriter Alejandro Cosavella called on the group to produce his album Tro in collaboration with Esperanto artists from different countries. Vojaĝo then got to work, this time with the collaboration of Didier Jéol on drums and, a few months later, in 2019, the Ale and Vojaĝo's album could be published by Vinilkosmo.
In 2022 Vojaĝo is releasing their third album titled Intergalaksia. A post-trip-hop oriented album that gives pride of place to sound, melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic research, and where electronic instruments happily combine with classical instruments (flute, tenor sax, soprano sax, clarinet, bombard, etc.).
Vojaĝo is a group committed to the defense of the environment and friendship between peoples. This is the reason why they use Esperanto, the fair international language. They claim multiple musical influences among which we can cite Chlorine Free (nu jazz), Massive Attack (trip hop), The Orb (ambient), Steve Reich (minimalist music), Art of Noise (sampled music), Miles Davis (jazz-rock), Jacob do Bandolim (choro).
Vojaĝo has participated in significant concerts such as the World Esperanto Congress (UK) in 2015 in Lille Grand-Palais as well as the National Esperanto Congress (SAT-Amikaro) in 2019 at the Gabrielle Robine Municipal Theater in Montluçon.
Vojaĝo is made up of:
Gilles Bénard: keyboards
Didier Jéol: drums, electronic percussion
Didier Kerboull: bass, bass synthesizer
Jean-Claude Patalano: soprano sax, tenor sax, clarinet, flute, wind controller
